Measure Intelligence and use Results for Educational Placement

A comprehensive and cost-effective intelligence test, the RIAS is a high-quality, reliable instrument that provides the necessary information to help clinicians make decisions regarding classification, selection, and educational placement. Individually administered, the RIAS includes a conormed, supplemental measure of memory and is ideal for use in both educational and clinical settings.

We recommend transitioning to the  RIAS-2.

Features and benefits

  • Assesses both verbal and nonverbal intelligence. Verbal intelligence is assessed by measuring verbal problem solving and verbal reasoning where acquired knowledge and skills are important; nonverbal intelligence is assessed by measuring reasoning and spatial ability using novel situations and stimuli that are predominantly nonverbal.
  • Includes a quick memory assessment. The RIAS provides a basic, overall measure of short-term memory skills (e.g., working memory, short-term memory, learning); measures recall in the verbal domain; and evaluates the ability to recall pictorial stimuli.
  • Fast. Administration of the four intelligence subtests takes approximately 20-25 minutes; administering the memory assessment adds only 10 minutes.
  • Screening version is available. Derived from the RIAS, the Reynolds Intellectual Screening Test (RIST) consists of one verbal subtest and one nonverbal subtest. This brief screening measure takes only 10 minutes to administer and helps to quickly identify individuals who need a more comprehensive intellectual assessment or an intellectual reevaluation.

Available in other languages

  • The RIAS materials, including the manual, have been translated into European Spanish and designed especially for Spanish-speaking clinicians and their clients. All normative data were collected in Spain. Certain test items and stimuli in this translation may vary from the English version because of cultural and linguistic differences between the countries and their language. The screening version, the RIST, has also been translated and normed with a Spanish population.
  • The RIAS is also available in Danish. Contact our Customer Support Department at 1.800.331.8378.

FAQs

What is the technical information for the RIAS?

Test structure

The RIAS includes a two-subtest Verbal Intelligence Index (VIX), a two-subtest Nonverbal Intelligence Index (NIX), and a Composite Intelligence Index (CIX), created by combining the VIX and NIX scores. The CIX assesses overall general intelligence (g), including the ability to reason, solve problems, and learn. A Composite Memory Index (CMX) is derived from the two supplementary memory subtests, Verbal Memory and Nonverbal Memory.

Technical information

  • Normative data are based on 2,438 individuals ages 3-94 years residing in 41 states, matched to U.S. Census data for age, gender, geographic region, ethnicity, and years of education completed.
  • To obtain clinical normative data, the RIAS was administered to 507 individuals representing 15 different clinical groups within the following categories: organic syndromes, mental retardation, learning disability, ADHD, and psychiatric disorders.
